The United States assured India that future artificial intelligence (AI) models will not be “shut down”. This statement came days after Washington abruptly banned access to advanced models from Anthropic for national security reasons, a senior Indian official told South China Morning Post on Thursday.
“An understanding was reached, and they [US officials] certainly indicated that access to technologies, once granted, will not be shut down. I think that was an assurance,” said S. Krishnan, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and head of the Indian delegation at the summit.
Consultations on AI ‘kill switch’
India expressed its concern about the AI “kill switch”—the ability to shut down access to technology—on the sidelines of the “Pax Silica” summit in Washington. This US-led initiative aims to create AI supply chains without China’s involvement.
“The American concern is mainly about how these models could potentially be used, and they were considering an internal review mechanism for some of them before their release,” Krishnan explained to SCMP.
In early June, the Trump administration issued an export control directive for national security reasons, banning foreign nationals from using the most advanced AI models from Anthropic—Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company subsequently disconnected access to both models worldwide without warning.
