Beijing criticizes US bill targeting Russian energy buyers

On Wednesday, the US Congress passed a bill authorizing Washington to impose sanctions on Russia and its major energy importers, including China. The legislation was passed shortly before Xi Jinping‘s expected visit to the US.

Beijing’s reaction to the new authority

Beijing has criticized the decision. When asked about the bill, China‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang stated that the country has always opposed “extraterritorial jurisdiction.”

According to Geng Shuang, such measures lack a basis in international law and have not received authorization from the UN Security Council.
