Opposition wins Swedish election after 100% of votes counted

The center-left opposition has secured a majority in the Sweden parliamentary elections. Following the preliminary count of all votes, the bloc holds 176 seats in the 349-member parliament, compared to 173 for the center-right bloc led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the Sweden Democrats. Final results are expected once the recount is complete.

Social Democrats aim to form a government

The election outcome paves the way for Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson, who served as Prime Minister from 2021–2022, to attempt to form a new government. During her premiership in 2022, Sweden applied for NATO membership. The Social Democrats have already stated their intention to continue the previous government’s security policy and support for Ukraine.

Data released by the Swedish Election Authority represents preliminary full results. A recount is currently underway. Official final results, including the distribution of seats among specific candidates, are expected this weekend. The new parliament is scheduled to convene on September 28.

Social Democrat platform

In an interview with Politico published before the election, Magdalena Andersson supported using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, a position also reported by Gazeta Wyborcza. The Social Democrat leader emphasized the importance of the welfare state, specifically social protection and school funding. She also stated that her party would take a firm stance against crime.
