UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed Britain’s ambition to «get closer to Europe» during a meeting in London, a Downing Street spokesman said on Thursday, 3 September.
Burnham told his French counterpart that the European Union’s Made in Europe initiative – which may give preference to European‑made goods in public procurement – «could pose significant challenges for British industry», the spokesman added.
Burnham advocates for closer ties with the EU
Last month, Burnham said the UK should be bolder in pursuing stronger links with the European Union.
During Thursday’s meeting with Macron, both leaders «agreed that it is vital to work together to find a way forward to protect shared interests», the spokesman said.
The meeting followed British King Charles’s visit to an exhibition on Wednesday, where the historic Bayeux Tapestry was on display. The tapestry has been loaned to the British Museum on a temporary basis from its permanent home in northern France under an agreement with the French government.
