Prime Minister Andy Burnham and US President Donald Trump agreed during a phone call on Monday on the need to continue working towards a ceasefire that would prevent further loss of life, a Downing Street spokesperson said. The leaders spoke on Monday afternoon.
At the start of the call, Andy Burnham congratulated Donald Trump on Labor Day and highlighted recent positive employment figures in the US. He also reaffirmed the UK‘s support for Ukraine and endorsed the recent US‑led peace talks.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Burnham stressed the importance of a two‑state solution, the restoration of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Diplomatic efforts to end the war
US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held encouraging talks in Kyiv on Sunday, following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. According to the Associated Press, these diplomatic efforts aim to end the fighting.
Andy Burnham‘s first international visit after taking office was a trip to Kyiv, undertaken as a sign of support for Ukraine.
The Prime Minister also noted that the British government is fostering a more positive stance toward Ukraine and making progress, although much work remains. He pointed to encouraging signs of economic growth in the UK.
Reaction to the Leipzig airport incident
Last week, Andy Burnham said that Russia‘s attempts to undermine the unity of allies and their willingness to support Ukraine are futile and doomed to failure.
The statement came after a drone carrying explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig airport. The device was later neutralised. The UK and other allies have blamed Russia for the incident, and the British government summoned a senior Russian diplomat to protest last month’s flagrant and reckless attack.
Leipzig airport is a major international cargo hub used to provide support to the government of Ukraine, which has been resisting the Russian invasion for over four years. Moscow denies involvement in the incident.
