France is adhering to the delivery schedule for SAMP/T air defense systems to Ukraine, a representative for the office of French President Emmanuel Macron said during a press briefing on Monday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government protocol, noted that Emmanuel Macron announced the transfer of additional interceptors last month in response to Kyiv’s request to bolster air defenses amid an intensification of Russian aerial attacks.
Diplomatic efforts and negotiations
The statement follows a visit to Ukraine on Sunday by senior officials from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. According to the official, information provided by United States representatives to their European counterparts suggests the Kremlin has signaled a willingness to open new negotiations with Ukraine following parliamentary elections in Russia at the end of September. Europe is working to strengthen Ukraine‘s defense capabilities to improve Kyiv‘s position on the battlefield and during future peace talks.
Arms delivery details
In July, the French presidential administration announced plans to provide Ukraine with two SAMP/T systems, which are to be returned once an upgraded version becomes available starting in 2027. At that time, France and Italy agreed to accelerate the delivery of jointly produced Aster 30 missiles, used in SAMP/T systems, to October. They also granted a license for the production of these missiles in Ukraine.
Additionally, in July, Paris and Kyiv reached a preliminary agreement for the purchase of 16 Rafale fighter jets manufactured by Dassault Aviation, which are expected to become operational between 2028 and 2029. Last year, Ukraine announced plans to acquire a total of 100 such aircraft.
