German Left Party urges Berlin to assist Spain and accept migrants from Ceuta

The German Left Party has urged Germany to support Spain and accept asylum seekers from the exclave of Ceuta. Deputy faction leader Clara Bünger stated that the situation in Ceuta is “not a natural disaster, but the result of political decisions.”

According to Bünger, people are fleeing war, poverty, and the climate crisis. She emphasized that “higher walls do not stop them; they only make the escape more deadly. Now the most important thing is that no one else dies.”

Spanish data indicates that about 60,000 people have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco in recent days. The local government reported 34 deaths. Approximately 25,000 of these individuals have already been returned to Morocco, according to the Spanish Ministry of Interior.

Responsibility of Germany and the EU

People need access to medical care, water, and a safe place to stay. Bünger emphasized that “Germany and the EU are obliged to help with supplies and accept those seeking protection.” She also noted that “those who believed that the problem could be solved with even greater isolation are mistaken.”

The Left Party’s spokesperson in the Bundestag on internal and migration policy, Clara Bünger, stated that as long as there are no safe and legal routes, people will continue to face mortal danger.

Reaction of the German government and Spain

Earlier, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) used the situation in Ceuta to announce the extension of German border controls. He told DER SPIEGEL that “success in pushing back illegal migration must be maintained and further expanded.”

Dobrindt and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) called on the Spanish government to return the arriving migrants to Morocco. The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, described the events as an “attack” on the territorial integrity of his country and attributed the influx to rumors spread by human trafficking networks.
