King Charles III has authorized a letter to senior UK officials confirming that his younger son Harry and his wife Meghan remain outside the working royal family. As reported by the BBC and other British media on September 7, this confirmation followed the couple’s return to the United Kingdom.
“In short, their position is akin to that of private individuals with commercial and charitable interests,” the letter states. Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Stepping back from royal duties
Prince Harry and his family returned to the United Kingdom at the end of August, six years after the couple stepped back from royal duties and moved to the United States.
Harry and Meghan relocated to the United States in 2020, leaving official royal duties to pursue independent careers. Since then, Harry has remained in the media spotlight, accusing the royal family of neglect, the tabloid press of ruining his life, and the British government of failing to provide adequate security, which he claims has prevented him from returning home safely.
