Russia actively preparing sabotage against Denmark, counterintelligence chief warns

Russia is “actively” preparing sabotage operations against Denmark, particularly targeting its defense industry, the head of Denmark’s counterintelligence service, Emil Græsholm, has warned.

He made the statement to local media on Thursday. In an interview with the daily newspaper Berlingske, Græsholm said: “The Russians are actively preparing sabotage actions targeting the defense industry in Denmark.”

Threat to the defense industry

Emil Græsholm, head of Denmark’s counterintelligence service (PET), emphasized in an interview with TV2 that “it is fundamentally important that the defense industry, in the broadest sense, takes the necessary security measures to be able to protect itself.” According to him, “many in the sector are already actively working on this.”

As early as 2024, PET reported that the Russian threat to Denmark, which supports Ukraine, had increased.

Recruitment of ‘ordinary Danes’

According to Emil Græsholm, Russian intelligence services are seeking to recruit “completely ordinary Danes” to carry out various tasks. These may include photographing, studying, and passing on information about access conditions and security around certain facilities.

“We are talking about such methods because they do not necessarily have to look like a spy movie,” Emil Græsholm stressed in the interview with Berlingske.
