Felipe VI and his family voiced support for the Spanish enclave in Africa under the slogan «unity, coexistence, and future». The statement came after more than 72,000 migrants arrived illegally in the city.
Debate over monarch’s visit
The royal family’s message appeared amid debates about a possible future visit by Felipe VI to Ceuta. On Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said there were «sufficient grounds» for the monarch to travel to the autonomous city, which he has not yet visited.
During the democratic period, Ceuta has hosted Juan Carlos I and Sofía only once—in November 2007. The government assured that the visit «will take place» but did not give a date. The Royal Palace has not commented on the matter.
Comparison of visits
Pedro Sánchez, after returning from vacation, boasted that he is the president of democratic Spain who has visited both autonomous cities most frequently. He compared himself with the monarch, incorrectly claiming that Felipe VI had not visited them in «20 years».
