The United States has urged Russia to “stay away” from supporting Iran after Russian President Vladimir Putin said he intends to help Tehran. Washington plans to cut off any external assistance to the Iranian regime with new sanctions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the comment in an interview with Fox News, answering a question about his message to Russians following Putin‘s remarks. “Listen, my message to everyone is: stay away! We all want this conflict to end, and the quickest way to do that is for no one to provide any support to this regime. We will sever all ties they have with the outside world,” Bessent said.
He added that last week sanctions were imposed on a branch of an Egyptian bank in Dubai, through which the Iranian regime received more than 1.8 billion dollars in 2025. Bessent said the United States will systematically monitor financial channels and shut down any bad actors. He also stressed that sanctions against Tehran are being applied that, in his words, “will suffocate” the Iranian regime.
Russia and Iran cooperation
According to the Financial Times, Russia has been secretly helping Iran develop a new type of supersonic cruise missile since 2023. These missiles could potentially threaten U.S. aircraft carriers and other ships in the Middle East.
Journalists note that Moscow is trying to provide Tehran with needed assistance during a difficult period of war with the United States, including the supply of essential goods, though the exact nature of that aid is not specified.
