Sudan has accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of involvement in recent drone attacks on its territory and warned that such aggression “will not go unanswered.” In response to these incidents, the Sudanese government recalled its ambassador from Ethiopia on Tuesday.

The Sudanese government stated that Addis Ababa and the UAE were behind an attack on Khartoum International Airport, which forced authorities to suspend its operations for three days. Sudan’s military reported having evidence of four drone attacks launched from neighboring Ethiopia since early March and claimed the UAE supplied these drones.

Ethiopia’s Response and Rebel Funding Accusations

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, dismissed Sudan’s accusations as “baseless.” Instead, Ethiopia accused Sudan of fueling unrest and funding rebels in the Tigray region, specifically the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also noted that it had not publicized alleged violations of its territorial integrity because the two countries, Ethiopia and Sudan, share “historical and strong friendly ties.” A senior TPLF official, Amanuiel Assefa, rejected the federal government’s claims, telling AFP: “We have no ties with the Sudanese authorities,” adding that the government blames everyone “but itself for its failures.”

UAE’s Stance and Conflict Context

The United Arab Emirates has not yet responded to the latest accusations. The UAE has previously denied on multiple occasions funding the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group at war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The conflict between the RSF and SAF has been ongoing for over three years.
