The Taliban stated on Wednesday that establishing diplomatic and economic relations with the United States is a “national necessity” for Afghanistan, as they seek to expand international ties and gain broader recognition.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the fundamentalist government, made the remarks while presenting the achievements of his administration over the past year—from June 2025 to June 2026. “Afghanistan needs diplomatic relations with the United States, as well as economic relations. Mutual cooperation and benefit are part of our national needs,” he emphasized.
The spokesman clarified that the policy of the Islamic Emirate, as the Taliban refer to their rule, is to maintain contacts with all countries. He noted the diplomatic apparatus’s efforts to establish positive relations with Washington, as the United States is regarded as a key state in the modern world. These comments come as the regime in Kabul, which still lacks wide international recognition, intensifies its efforts to strengthen ties at both regional and global levels.
Diplomatic Achievements and International Relations
Zabihullah Mujahid cited Russia‘s recognition of Taliban rule last year as one of the main diplomatic achievements. He also mentioned the opening or resumption of diplomatic missions in Kuwait and Germany.
“During the year 1447 of the Hijra, diplomatic and consular relations with Kuwait were officially established, and three representations abroad began operating,” he detailed, referring to Taliban‑run embassies in Kuwait and Berlin, as well as a general consulate in Bonn, Germany.
He also highlighted Afghanistan’s official participation in the Moscow Format, with the Taliban’s foreign minister attending its seventh meeting. According to him, Afghan officials made 93 official visits to other countries over the past year.
Economic Relations and Humanitarian Aid
In the economic sphere, Zabihullah Mujahid noted increased trade with neighboring countries and India. Afghanistan exported goods worth $773 million to India, while imports from India amounted to $2.066 billion.
He also thanked New Delhi for its assistance to Afghan medical institutions, including the delivery of about 20 ambulances and various medical equipment.
