Trump considers renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” amid trade war with Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he is weighing the possibility of renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” as tensions rise in the trade dispute between Washington and Canada.

The move would echo the unilateral action the Republican president took last year when he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America by executive order.

The United States and Canada are locked in a trade conflict. Canada is expected to announce retaliatory measures on Tuesday after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth about 20 billion dollars over the weekend, following a breakdown in negotiations.

Trump proposes renaming Lake Ontario

“The United States is seriously considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, because we do not expect to have much business with Ontario in the future,” Trump wrote on social media on Tuesday.

Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and the hub of the country’s automotive industry.
