The United States resumed extensive strikes on Iran after a five-day pause, following an Iranian missile attack on American forces the previous day.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it “successfully completed a massive series of strikes on Iran” as of 10:00 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday (02:00 GMT on Thursday). According to CENTCOM, the attacks were in retaliation for Iranian strikes on American military personnel stationed at a US base in Jordan the day before. Iranian media reported that at least three civilians were killed in the latest US strikes.
Hours after these events, Jordan and Kuwait reported Iranian attacks on their territories.
Targets of the Strikes and Regional Context
CENTCOM claims its strikes targeted dozens of sites associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran, according to a statement published on the platform X. Among the targets were “military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, as well as naval capabilities.”
These attacks occurred shortly after US President Donald Trump vowed to strike Iran “very hard.” Al Jazeera reporter Resul Serdar Atas, reporting from Tehran, noted that the latest strikes were “focused on southern provinces of Iran, particularly along the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” similar to US strikes during the recent 13-day campaign.
