The lead of Brazil’s President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a potential second round of the presidential election in October has narrowed, according to the results of a CNT/MDA poll released on Tuesday.
According to the poll, Lula would receive 48.0% of the votes in the second round, while Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, would get 39.1%. In the June poll, Lula had 49.3% of the votes, and Bolsonaro had 36.8%.
First round and rules for the second round
In the first round, Lula would lead with 42.4% of the votes, which is almost unchanged compared to the June poll. Following him are Bolsonaro with 28.7%, Ronaldo Caiado with 4.0%, Romeu Zema with 3.3%, and Renan Santos with 2.8%.
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the valid votes in the first round, the two candidates with the highest results advance to the second round.
Poll Methodology
CNT/MDA surveyed 2,002 individuals from August 5 to 9 in 140 Brazilian municipalities. The poll’s margin of error is 2.2 percentage points in either direction.
