EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas expressed hope that the visit of the US president’s special envoys to Ukraine helped them see that Russia has no real interest in peace. She made the remarks at a press conference in Lithuania, as reported by LRT.
Commenting on the September 6 visit of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv, Kaja Kallas noted that the civilian population of the Ukrainian capital had not been subjected to Russian shelling for three days. “I am glad to see that the special envoy visited Kyiv. For Ukrainians, this means three days without shelling, which is a positive outcome of the visit. They have already visited Russia several times,” the diplomat said.
Details of the negotiation process
Kaja Kallas said she hopes the American negotiators observed the situation on the ground and drew the appropriate conclusions. “I hope they heard about the reality on the ground and that it showed them: Russia is not actually ready for peace. On the contrary, when it loses the initiative, it bombards civilians from the air. At the moment we see no signs that Russia is interested in peace, and it has made no concessions it could have offered,” she added.
US president’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv by train on September 6, where they met President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Sofia Square. At the same time, national‑security advisors from France, Britain and Germany arrived in the capital. Before traveling to Ukraine, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
According to Steve Witkoff, the American delegation’s task was to “bring the sides closer together.” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said several new ideas for the negotiation process were proposed during the meetings. A source for “EuroPravda” reported that Vladimir Putin will be ready for a new round of peace talks in Ukraine after Russia’s parliamentary elections on September 18–20.
