On Wednesday, August 26, a new earthquake occurred in Colombia with the epicenter in the department of Santander. According to the Geological Service of Colombia, its magnitude was 5.1, while the President’s Office reported an earthquake of magnitude 5.4.
According to the Geological Service of Colombia, the epicenter was located near Los Santos in the Santander department. People were evacuated from buildings in the city for safety reasons.
The tremors were felt in cities such as Medellín and Bogotá, where people were also evacuated from buildings.
Official reaction and appeals to the population
The President’s Office of the Republic reported via their X account that after the 5.4 magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 11:45, the authorities maintained constant contact with state agencies and risk management services to check for possible consequences.
The authorities urged Colombians to remain calm, follow the recommendations of the relevant services, and report any new circumstances through official channels.
