Canada on Tuesday announced its intention to impose tariffs of up to 50% on about 700 American goods.
According to officials, tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% will take effect on September 8, the day after Labor Day in the U.S. This move is a response to the escalating tensions between Ottawa and Washington following the failure of trade negotiations.
In total, Canada plans to impose tariffs on goods worth about 20 billion U.S. dollars, which represents approximately 7% of the total volume of U.S. imports from Canada.
Goods subject to tariffs
Among the goods on which Canada plans to impose tariffs are American steel, aluminum, motorcycles, washing machines and dryers, chainsaws, processed cheese, mollusks, and frozen octopus.
