Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has said that the publication of a map by U.S. President Donald Trump, which overlays the American flag onto the territory of several other nations, is an insult to Icelanders, Canadians, and Greenlanders.
On September 7, Donald Trump posted an AI‑generated map to his Truth Social account. The image shows the American flag covering the United States, Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, and a number of Caribbean nations. The U.S. President offered no comment and gave no explanation for the post.
Reaction from the Icelandic Prime Minister
Kristrún Frostadóttir called the subtext of the image absurd and said that it insults Icelanders, Canadians, and Greenlanders. “There is nothing funny or normal about mocking the sovereignty of states, especially today, when it is not something to be taken for granted. We must clearly state our position on this matter,” the Prime Minister said.
She also noted that Icelanders currently have no issues in their relations with the United States.
Earlier, following the post, Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir summoned the U.S. Ambassador for a meeting. Additionally, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenlanders do not want to be Americans.
