Only 41 percent of Swedes fully or partially agree that a Jew can be prime minister, which is nine percentage points lower than in 2020. This is stated in a new report, ‘Antisemitiska attityder ökar i Sverige’ (Antisemitic attitudes are increasing in Sweden), based on two studies conducted in 2020 and 2025.
Overall, the results show that more Swedes than before agree with antisemitic statements, while fewer people clearly distance themselves from them. The report’s author, Henrik Bachner, described the situation as alarming.
Spread of Antisemitism and Possible Causes
According to the report, antisemitism is observed across all segments of the population, but it is more pronounced in certain groups. These include older age groups, individuals with specific religious beliefs, and those with particular party affiliations.
The report does not identify a single cause for the change in attitude, but Henrik Bachner suggests it may stem from several interacting factors. These include the rise in antisemitism recorded after the attack on Israelis on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza. The report also highlights the role of social media in spreading and reinforcing antisemitic attitudes.
Conspiracy Theories and Their Impact
As part of the latest study in 2025, the organization Forum för levande historia also examined Swedes’ attitudes toward various right-wing extremist conspiracy theories. For instance, 10 percent of respondents fully or partially agreed with the statement that a population replacement is occurring in Sweden.
Henrik Bachner noted that it would be interesting to track how this connection evolves over time.
