The damage caused by the fires that swept France this summer is estimated at nearly €500 million. According to France Assureurs, the events have generated roughly 25 000 insurance claims. This preliminary estimate is based on data collected up to mid‑August.
The blazes that ravaged Gironde, the Landes and Var this summer resulted in about 25 000 claims and total losses close to €500 million, France Assureurs said in a Friday press release. The federation’s president, who represents almost all French insurers, Florence Lustman, emphasized that the early figures—compiled from cases recorded up to mid‑August—demonstrate an “exceptional scale of damage.” The total could rise, as victims may file claims until 31 August.
Losses for Households and Businesses
The overwhelming majority of cases involve private‑property damage—around 21 000 claims have been logged. This figure includes, among other things, coverage for temporary accommodation for a portion of the 30 000 people the authorities forced to evacuate their homes. Among entrepreneurs, traders, companies, farmers and local authorities, nearly 3 000 declarations have been recorded.
Of those, more than 1 800 files were opened for “business interruption losses,” i.e., loss of turnover and income caused by the forced cessation of economic activity. These losses, estimated at just under €30 million, occurred in most cases without any direct material damage to the enterprises, the federation notes.
Historic Drought and Government Assistance
The impact of this year’s fires far exceeds that of the forest fires in the summer of 2022. Back then, from early June to the end of September, roughly 2 000 claims were filed for a total of €80 million. The federation assures that for almost all claims related to housing or businesses that require expert assessment, verification has already been carried out or will be completed in the coming days.
These financial estimates come against the backdrop of the summer of 2026, which in France was marked by repeated heat waves and a historic drought. Fires have burned nearly 100 000 hectares of forest—a record for the past 20 years of satellite monitoring. The largest blaze occurred in Gironde, where, in mid‑July, the fire destroyed 42 000 hectares. It is the biggest fire of that magnitude since 1949. Although no fatalities were reported, the village of Le Porge saw 180 houses razed, making it the hardest‑hit locality.
During a visit to the region in mid‑August, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said he intended to “deploy heavy artillery.” He announced the release of €12 million in immediate aid, tax relief for affected businesses, and an accelerated process for issuing building permits to rebuild the destroyed homes.
